The institution of government is there to protect and provide for a community as a whole. But what happens when an instituted government does non take into consideration the individual needs and flaws of the people at bottom their regime? One of the many symbols that Golding utilizes is the signal turn on that the boys, mostly Ralph and Piggy, so desperately want to keep alive. The signal fire represents civilization of the boys; in simpleton words the fire symbolizes the desire to be rescued. At start all the boys agree that a fire must be made to signal their presence. The boys had an excitement about the fire at first. There was something about it; the desire to start it was great. When Ralph shouted that they indispensable more than wood life became a race with the fire and the boys scattered through the upper forest. To keep a piece flag of flame flying on the mountain was the ready end and no one looked further(41).



Fire was the but big concern for the boys, their minds were solely occupied on starting a fire, and there was optimism within the group. As they spent more time on the island their optimism not only go awayd out they also lost interest in keeping the fire. Ralph and Piggy had to move the boys constantly the importance of it. On one occasion a ship passed by the island but since the boys let the fire die out they could not be seen. The fire was dead, but shucks and his group brought back the first kill of their stay there.
